Two happy pickers here at BrightBerry Farm in Dixmont, showing off their bounty Tuesday, in the plastic "shoeboxes" we provide pickers to take to the berry patches. Second photo shows their yield filled nearly six quart containers to take home with them.
We're open today (Wednesday) 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and are eyeing the weather reports to decide about tomorrow. Initial forecasts said rain Thursday, so we said we'd be closed, but now it looks like an overnight storm, clearing tomorrow. We'll let you know.

07/15/2024

Our Opening Day yesterday (Sunday, July 14) was a great success. First blueberries of the season were ready to pick five days earlier than last year (yes, the heat), and more pounds of berries were picked yesterday than on opening day than last year. Looks like it will be a good season,
We're open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Today (Monday) through Wednesday look good, rain predicted for Thursday morning. We provide picking boxes and green quart boxes to take your berries home. We accept cash, checks and credit cards.

It's Opening Day tomorrow (Sunday, July 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for our Pick-Your-Own organically grown high-bush blueberries here at BrightBerry Farm in Dixmont. We're glad we decided against opening today, we've dodged several cloudbursts, starting with one right at 9 a.m.
The early blueberry varieties are going full-on, and in the last two days the mid-season rows are also turning blue. So, that means for the next month or so, we'll be OPEN DAILY from 9 - 1, weather permitting. Before you come, check here on Facebook for any schedule changes. When you arrive, check in at the tent in the field, get your picking boxes, and head to the patches. Price is $6/pound, same as last year.
AND, while you're here, check out the display of Morning Glories in gallon containers, set up near the tent, $10 a pot. They're already about 2 ft tall, some are on the verge of blossoming, and are eager for a home.
Other plants from our dwindling inventory -- tomato, eggplant and parsley primarily -- may also find their way down the hill from the house-attached greenhouse. Sorry, peppers, squash, cukes and other herbs are all gone.
(We closed out our display at the Natural Living Center in Bangor last week.)

07/11/2024

So, now that our seedling season is all wrapped up, we're on to our other major farm project -- our pick-your-own berries. More specifically, our organically-grown high-bush blueberries. We have more than 300 mature plants in two different plots, with the earliest varieties just starting to ripen.

We had hoped to open this weekend, but the weather forecast for Saturday sounds dicey. So, at this point (Thursday) we're looking at Sunday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as our opening day. And since we think there will be enough ripe berries to go a second day, we'll open again on Monday, July 15, from 9 -1. (That's assuming Sunday's crowd doesn't take them all. If so, we'll let you know.)

Price is $6 per pound, same as last year. We have plastic picking containers, and will send your berries home in green quart boxes, unless you bring your own.

Since only the early rows are in play for the next week or so, after Monday we may have to skip a day or two to give those rows time to ripen more berries, enough to make the trip to the farm worth it for you. Schedule changes will be posted here. When the mid-season rows start turning blue, we'll be open every day, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. The season usually extends well into August, but this early heat wave may hurry-up the ripening.

Just so you know, we've been entirely PYO for the last few years. No longer do we do the picking, packing, and selling wholesale to stores. Nor will we have picked boxes available at our check-in tent. We're trying hard to retire, so PYO is the best way we can see to ease into that.

This first week of July will be our last for the three seedling carts we stock at the Natural Living Center, Longview Drive in Bangor. With the 4th of July in the middle of this week (with maybe some extra time off from work), this is an excellent time to finish up that home garden. And to close out our seedling season the coming week.

Those three carts still have a nice selection of tomato seedlings (cherries, cocktail, paste, slicers and heirlooms), plus the totality of our pepper inventory (both sweet and hot) begging to be put into their forever home gardens. Likewise petunia plants in pint pots. The last of our zucchini and yellow squash plants, eggplants, catnip and parsley are now on those three carts. When they’re gone, they’re gone.

This terrific arrangement with the NLC means our seedlings are available seven days a week, every day while that store is open for business. Don’t miss this final opportunity.

Herbs are back in the mix on our seedling carts at the Natural Living Center in Bangor. Basil (Genovese, Sweet Thai, and Towers), parsley, catnip, dill.
And Morning Glories were added today, most of them doubles in 4.5" pots.
They join the 34 varieties of Tomatoes (cherries, cocktail, paste, slicers and heirlooms), all of them two months old with healthy root balls prime for transplanting into larger pots or into your garden.
And we re-stocked the four varieties of Eggplant that almost got cleaned out over the weekend. They're right below the sweet and hot peppers, on one of our three carts. Marigolds in 4-packs and petunias in pint pots round out the inventory.
Check it out!
(Cukes are coming soon, but we're not doing summer squash or melons this year, sorry. Still time to start them yourself -- seed packets are available in the produce aisle at NLC.)
